And March has arrived as well - Mar. 4, 2019

A quick wrap-up from last week...

Last week we did a variety of things including starting the work for our Change Maker Challenge (more details will be coming soon), had Netball several days of the week, finished out multiplication and division unit, worked on some math stations that were somewhat tricky in some cases, scored more certificates in Mathletics, wrote poetry for Pink Shirt day, read Wonder, had a Right to Play assembly with a special guest, continued working on our social studies and science, learned about the verb finir, started a review of French nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and determinants, started to talk about Lent, practiced our parts for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy,  and some of the students even got to present their free choice topic google slides to the whole class.  Here are some pictures to wrap up our week.

Watching a video about the Canadian Boreal Forest for our Change Maker project.  This was a video done in 2005-2006 with David Suzuki and Justin Trudeau (before he became our PM :).)

Working hard at solving the problems on our Math stations (these included Arithmagons, Idatos, Arithmetic tables, etc)  These allowed us to practice our multiplication facts, division facts, addition facts, subtraction facts, logical reasoning skills and group work skills.
If anyone wants to try some of the Arithmagons out, this is a great website: https://nrich.maths.org/2670

This was on Thursday morning when we had a wonderful visitor from Right To Play.  The students learned about what Right to Play is, and even learned a few quick games that we will try to continue to use in class as well.

This is one of the many student presentations we had this week.  I have to say that students can be very elaborate on their topics of choice.  It is a skills to be able to talk about your passions and sharing these passions can help us build confidence.  Looking forward to more as they are finished.

Here is our sea of pink wall.  The students created poems for Pink Shirt day in addition to unique t-shirt designs.  The poems had a certain format in terms of the guiding points, but the students had to also write from the perspective of the different players in a situation where bullying occurs.  As such, the class drew randomly various roles: bully, bullied, bystander and brave.  They then wrote what they feel, think, see, etc... using these different roles.  If you get a chance to stop and read some of these, please do; they are truly powerful.

This week, we started with our new math unit on the Calendar, time, etc.  We are getting close to the unit on measurement which will be crucial for our field trip in a few short weeks.
We also started an art project (pictogram making) within our Social Studies class.  It will be about a Kokopelli Flute Player.  There are quite a few steps involved, so we are looking forward to starting to do our first designs tomorrow.
We also had the pleasure of having our Grade 1 buddies in our class this week to show them one of the presentations some of the students did last week: about dogs.  They were a wonderful audience :)

"Verbes" quiz:

As I was not in on Friday, we have delayed our quiz on conjugation of the verbs Être & Aller until tomorrow (March 5th).  Keep practicing these tonight.

This week on Friday, we will also have the verbes Finir & Faire:

Ash Wednesday Liturgy:

As mentioned, we will be responsible for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy on March 6th at 1:30 PM and all the students have a reading part.  I have given them their sheets and have asked them to practice at home too.  It shouldn't be difficult, but in case we get stage fright, having practiced is what can save us :).  PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!
