Spring is fast approaching - Feb 25, 2019

A quick wrap-up from last week...

The week went by real fast as we continued to work on our math, reading, writing conjugation and other skills.  Next week will be even more exciting, though it will be a 5 day week rather than a 4 day one. :)

This week we will learn about the verb finir and in the meantime, we will have a quiz on the verbs être and aller.  See below what the students are expected to know.  Again, I will read a short sentence for each pronoun and the students will need to spell and conjugate the verbs correctly.

Être:
Je suis
Tu es
Il / Elle / On est
Nous sommes
Vous êtes
Ils / Elles sont

Aller:
Je vais
Tu vas
Il / Elle / On va
Nous allons
Vous allez
Ils / Elles vont

Here are the songs to help us remember.

Être

Aller

This week we also started the Netball program that was organized for our students.  Every morning they start with a little bit of exercise, which is amazing.

Coming up, we will also have a Right to Play assembly on Thursday morning.  If you want to find out more about what Right to Play is, please visit this website: https://www.righttoplay.ca/en-ca/

Ash Wednesday Liturgy:
As mentioned below, we will be responsible for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy on March 6th and all the students have a reading part.  I have given them their sheets and have asked them to practice at home too.  It shouldn't be difficult, but in case we get stage fright, having practiced is what can save us :).  PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!

Spring Variety / Talent Show:
Last week we sent home a flyer about a talent show coming up.  Please make sure the form is returned by Feb 28th for consideration in the show.  The show will take place April 11th from 6:30 - 7:30 PM.  Here is the form in case it did not make it home :)

New week, new learning - Feb 19, 2019

Welcome back after a super long weekend for some :).  Hope everyone had a chance to rest up a bit.

We started our week again with a sharing circle, which we followed-up with math.  In math we are starting to wrap up our multiplications and divisions, which we will need to practice some more as we move along in our topics.  We are also now preparing for the math (area, perimeter) that we will need for our March 18th field trip.  Excitement is already building.

In French we reviewed the present tense of the 4 verbs we saw so far (avoir, être, aller, aimer) and we added the verb faire.  We are using songs to learn the correct conjugation of these verbs as well as building sentences using them both orally and on paper.  For this week, we will not have a spelling test but we will rather have a conjugation test.  The verbs for this week will be "avoir" & "aimer".  In both cases, I will read a short sentence for each pronoun and the students will need to spell them correctly.  Later on we will practice recall, for now the correct use of the verbs is the focus of our learning.

Here's what they need to know:
Avoir:
J'ai
Tu as
Il / Elle / On a
Nous avons
Vous avez
Ils / Elles ont

Aimer:
J'aime
Tu aimes
Il / Elle / On aime
Nous aimons
Vous aimez
Ils / Elles aiment

Here are the songs to help us remember.  We did not look at the one for Avoir in class yet.

Avoir

Aimer

These are what I will be marking.  The other words in the sentences will simply help me with knowing how to help students with spelling.  Those will not count.  Hope this makes sense :).

After lunch, we had the immense pleasure of having Ashley Ruben visit our class and read to us a story on Honouring the Buffalo.  She also brought a Buffalo robe with her and some beautiful moccasins, boots, medicine pouches and Buffalo hides.  She even had a real bone.  The students loved being able to sit on the Buffalo robe while listening to the story.  We learned so much about the many uses of the Buffalo.
We wrapped up the day with the reading of Wonder.  We are more than halfway through so we should be getting to watching the movie soon.

Joyeuse Saint Valentin! - Feb 13, 2019

What an energy filled short week :).  I apologize if students went home today with just a little more energy than they had in the morning.  We were once again spoiled with treats for Valentine's Day.

This week we continued working on our math skills, reviewed our math homework, learned a whole lot about the verb "aimer", read Wonder, read our Raz-kids books, had Hymn Sing, worked with our grade 1 buddies, had gym, and even spent time in the learning commons.  While it was three short days we had, we certainly accomplished quite a lot.  I had more planned, but sometimes plans don't always work out as expected. :).

One thing we also did is learn about MC Escher and his amazing artwork.  We looked at some videos and then we decided to do our own optical illusion art for Valentine's day.  The results were amazing.  We not only learned about how to draw, but also used our patterning skills and our understanding of the interplay between the shape of a line and the visual effect it can create.  The end result is displayed in our hallway.
Chess also continues to be a major attraction during transitions too so I may have to get one more set :).  We now have two and they are both often occupied.  My favourite part is that those who know how to play are now teaching those who don't and interactions develop between students where otherwise they wouldn't exist.  There are some great strategists in this class :).
As mentioned above, we were certainly spoiled in terms of Valentine's day treats.  Wonderful treats were brought in by Stephen, Addison, and Xavier.  We had tons of little gifts brought in by many students and, we also had a lovely card and bag full of cupcakes and oranges dropped off for the students by Mme Dumbrava.  The students were so pleased and excited to hear from her.  They truly have wonderful memories of their grade 3 teacher :).

Homework:
- Raz-kids French books (Assignment Feb 11 - Feb 15) - due Feb. 19

Upcoming Important Dates:
Thursday, February 14
- PD DAY - VALENTINE'S DAY

Friday, February 15

Wednesday, February 20 (Jour 6)
- Gym
- Popcorn Day

Thursday, February 21 (Jour 1)
- Math Quiz

Friday, February 22 (Jour 2)
- Hymn Sing
- Gym

Upcoming Field Trip - Volunteers needed:

Today I sent home field trip forms for an upcoming full day field trip to Calgary Tower on March 18th.  This field trip will be linked to our math curriculum focusing on area and perimeter.  There will be a "climbing the tower" component as well.  We will be climbing using the stairs INSIDE the tower (definitely not using ropes on the outside :)).  Please sign and return both the Field Trip form and the yellow waiver form by March 12th so we can organize the trip.

For this trip, I will also need two (2) volunteers to help throughout the day.  If you would like to volunteer, please send me an email.  Thank you in advance.

LOOKING AHEAD:

- February 25-27 - Netball (Grades 3-6)
- February 27 - Pink Shirt Day
- March 5 - Shrove Tuesday
- March 6 - Ash Wednesday Celebration @ 1:30 PM (hosted by Grade 4)
- March 8 - Report Cards go home

Wishing everyone a lovely super long weekend, a wonderful Valentine's Day, and a joy filled Family Day.

Hopefully the "love giggles" have subsided.

😂

Looking forward to seeing everyone on February 19.

One of those weeks - Feb. 9, 2019

This was a busy week but having been under the weather and trying to still get loads done, some things fell to the side, like my regular blog updates.  Working hard to get things back on track, but in the meantime, here is a long overdue update on our super cold week.

As usual, we started and ended our week with a sharing circle where we get to share what we did over the weekend and what we liked during the school week.  It is also an opportunity to speak in French and to practice our listening skills when others are talking. This is also how I learn about some of the exciting things the students do with subs as well.  I always love learning new things and I love how students are such amazing sponges when it comes to learning new games and new material.

This week in Math we continued hammering away at our multiplications while also starting to look at division.  We started looking at using arrays to do both operations and have begun discovering the commutative properties of multiplication (i.e. 4x3 = 3x4).
There are many great activities that the students can do in Mathletics to keep practicing these skills further.  I also learned this week that as students earn points on Mathletics, they help students and children from across the world in Zimbabwe have access to clean water, health care and education through UNICEF.  Click on the image below to learn a little bit more about this initiative.  Furthermore, as the students get certain number of points weekly, they also get certificates showing how they are contributing to both their own learning and that of others around the world. Congrats to Addison, Kaitlyn and Isabella who received certificates for this week and in some cases past weeks.

In French we did our regular journal entries on Monday, practiced our spelling words and Raz-kids books on Tuesday, learned about the present tense of the verbe aller, read a variety of french books with a buddy and had our usual spelling test. We will be focusing on a new verb every week moving forward and will also be starting a new book study shortly.

In English, we continued reading and answering questions about Wonder, continued working on our science and health connection through Planet Protectors academy (game shows, talking about food waste, etc.) and continued with our spelling practice and test. Although there will not be homework next week, we will continue working on our grammar again the following week as we continue exploring a variety of writing activities.

In Health we started talking about Healthy eating and what that means on day to day basis.  We will continue exploring this area and will also start looking at the new Canada Food Guide.  We often have Mme Annie also come in and do Mindfulness with us.  In Religion we talked about Reconciliation and what that means and we will start preparing our hearts for Easter.
In Music we continued to learn new songs and we will start revisiting rhythm and beat as the songs become more and more complex.  We will also continue composing as exploring and working through our own songs is one of the best ways to learn about notes, beat and rhythm.

What else did we do?  We watched a wonderful presentation by Xavier, Addison and Myla on their favourite pets.  They have demonstrated a good mastery of using Google Slides.  We also had some free choice time this week where the majority of students were working on their own google slides.  We will find time to present these to the class as well.  I think we have Google Slides fever in our classroom :).

I also brought into the classroom a chess set to allow students to not only learn how to play chess but also use their time strategizing with friends.  It has been a great success so I am planning on bringing in a few more sets as many wanted to learn or try.
Finally, on Friday afternoon we had a beautiful concert hosted by a String Quartet from the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.  The students simply soaked up the music and the presenters were just amazing.  I loved how enthusiastic my students were about talking about instruments and especially when they played a piece by Mozart, whom we used to inspire us to write our own music. We certainly are a lucky school to have had such performance in our gym.

What a Day! - Feb. 1, 2019

What a day!  We cannot express our gratitude enough to everyone at St. Gerard for a fun-filled fantastic field trip to Great West Productions Sugar Shack.  Based on the feedback from the students, it was truly amazing.  The food got great reviews too :).  Here are some pictures to show how much fun we had.

Have a wonderful weekend!
