Helping Grade 1s with Leprechaun Traps / practicing their Theater pieces
This week, the grade 4 students had the opportunity to help their grade 1 buddies with their Leprechaun traps and with practicing their theater pieces that Mme Celine had assigned to them.  As usual, our grade 4 students took their job very seriously :).

Kokopelli Flute Player Pictographs
The process of creating these pieces of art took about 2 weeks.  The students first created a design of the flute player surrounded by rocks, as it would have been seen in the Grotto Canyon once.  They then recreated their design on cardboard and worked real hard to cut out the pieces which were then glued onto a large piece of cardboard.  This helped give the pictographs a 3D feel.  The next step was done by me, as it involved covering the cardboards with lacquer, and then the students were ready for the final steps.
During the final stage, the students put 1-2 layers of paint on their Kokopelli cardboard layouts and then immediately placed a piece of sketch paper on top to create the final pictographs.  Here is a small sampling of the process and the final results.  The entire collection will be posted in the hallway across our classroom.

Alberta Treaty Mural (Clay for Kids)
Here are some pictures of the beautiful work our students did for the Alberta Treaty Mural with the help and guidance of two wonderful ladies from Clay for Kids.
We cannot wait to see the final mural. :)

As an extra treat, we also had Scarlet demonstrate a beautiful Irish costume and dance steps.  She went all the way around the school and did a short demo in each class.  Thank you Scarlet!

Alberta Champions Story Contest

As we are learning about the history of Alberta and its many peoples, this contest is a great fit for many of the students in Grade 4.  This is optional, however, I know some of the students would do great in this contest.  Here is a link to the details:

For this contest, the students choose an Albertan who had great impacts on the people and history of Alberta (past or present) and write a short story (up to 1000 words) describing a meeting with this individual.  The story must include and be based on a number of biographical details and accomplishments of the chosen Albertan.  More details can be found at the following link:

If anyone wishes to participate, I would love to help with the research process, the writing aspect and, ultimately, the submission steps.

The deadline for submissions is April 5th.

Spring is in the air - March 11, 2019

Only 9 more days until the first day of spring.  I am very much looking forward to it's arrival but am also very pleased with the warming of temperatures that we are experiencing now.

Again, a quick wrap-up from last week...

Last week we did a variety of things including working on our Math lessons on time and reading the clock, did our conjugation quiz from last week, did one for this week, had delicious pancakes and sausages served to us by Mr, Harries and Mme Tardif, continued to work on our Kokopelli art projects in Social Studies, prepared for and performed amazingly during our Liturgy, worked on Lent related activities during BFG, continued learning about healthy food choices, continued with our Planet Protector Academy work and even learned how to write sequential, repetitive and selective code for our bodies. The latter skills will come in handy as we embark on our Coding challenge through Coding Quest.  We also started talking about our new French book that we will be reading as a class: Les bas du pensionnat.  We will start on the background work for this book this week.  Here are some pictures to wrap up last week and even some from our wonderful presentation with David Bouchard from this morning.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast.
Food provided by the Knights of Columbus.  The pancakes were so delicious that I had many students come up to me to make sure that I ate some too as they thought I could not miss out on the delicious pancakes :).

Preparations for our Ash Wednesday Liturgy.
A lot of people were involved with helping with the Liturgy.  This school is incredibly blessed with many wonderful and supportive staff and students.
(Addison and Myla helping even during their lunch.)
(The crosses we prepared for the display.)

Recycling
Although I have not taken photos of our past amazing recycling teams, I will try to do so in the future.  Every Friday we have an amazing team of students, as selected by the person responsible for recycling, who go around the entire school and collect all the recycling they find.  They also try to make sure, everything is well sorted.  This was last week's team.  Addison is now the lead on recycling.  ALL our teams have done an amazing job so far this year.

Presentation of David Bouchard in St. Cecilia school.
Our class got to sit in the front row to hear Mr. Bouchard speak.  He also played the flute and mesmerized students and teachers alike with his music and wonderful stories.  He even taught us about the Medicine Wheel.  To find out more about Mr. Bouchard, here is his website: http://davidbouchard.com/
As we were last to leave, we even got a selfie and a class photo with Mr. Bouchard.

This week, we will continue to work with our math unit on the Calendar, time, etc.  We will also continue to work on our social studies art project (pictogram making) on the Kokopelli Flute Player.  We will continue to work on our Coding Quest project, read Wonder, work on Health, Lent, and many other activities.

Wednesday we will contribute to an Alberta Treaty mural the whole school is working on in collaboration with Clay for kids.  This mural will be on display in the school.

Don't forget that Friday there is no school.  We will be having parent-teacher interviews.

THERE WILL BE NO SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK.

And March has arrived as well - Mar. 4, 2019

A quick wrap-up from last week...

Last week we did a variety of things including starting the work for our Change Maker Challenge (more details will be coming soon), had Netball several days of the week, finished out multiplication and division unit, worked on some math stations that were somewhat tricky in some cases, scored more certificates in Mathletics, wrote poetry for Pink Shirt day, read Wonder, had a Right to Play assembly with a special guest, continued working on our social studies and science, learned about the verb finir, started a review of French nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and determinants, started to talk about Lent, practiced our parts for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy,  and some of the students even got to present their free choice topic google slides to the whole class.  Here are some pictures to wrap up our week.

Watching a video about the Canadian Boreal Forest for our Change Maker project.  This was a video done in 2005-2006 with David Suzuki and Justin Trudeau (before he became our PM :).)

Working hard at solving the problems on our Math stations (these included Arithmagons, Idatos, Arithmetic tables, etc)  These allowed us to practice our multiplication facts, division facts, addition facts, subtraction facts, logical reasoning skills and group work skills.
If anyone wants to try some of the Arithmagons out, this is a great website: https://nrich.maths.org/2670

This was on Thursday morning when we had a wonderful visitor from Right To Play.  The students learned about what Right to Play is, and even learned a few quick games that we will try to continue to use in class as well.

This is one of the many student presentations we had this week.  I have to say that students can be very elaborate on their topics of choice.  It is a skills to be able to talk about your passions and sharing these passions can help us build confidence.  Looking forward to more as they are finished.

Here is our sea of pink wall.  The students created poems for Pink Shirt day in addition to unique t-shirt designs.  The poems had a certain format in terms of the guiding points, but the students had to also write from the perspective of the different players in a situation where bullying occurs.  As such, the class drew randomly various roles: bully, bullied, bystander and brave.  They then wrote what they feel, think, see, etc... using these different roles.  If you get a chance to stop and read some of these, please do; they are truly powerful.

This week, we started with our new math unit on the Calendar, time, etc.  We are getting close to the unit on measurement which will be crucial for our field trip in a few short weeks.
We also started an art project (pictogram making) within our Social Studies class.  It will be about a Kokopelli Flute Player.  There are quite a few steps involved, so we are looking forward to starting to do our first designs tomorrow.
We also had the pleasure of having our Grade 1 buddies in our class this week to show them one of the presentations some of the students did last week: about dogs.  They were a wonderful audience :)

"Verbes" quiz:

As I was not in on Friday, we have delayed our quiz on conjugation of the verbs Être & Aller until tomorrow (March 5th).  Keep practicing these tonight.

Être:
Je suis
Tu es
Il / Elle / On est
Nous sommes
Vous êtes
Ils / Elles sont
Aller:
Je vais
Tu vas
Il / Elle / On va
Nous allons
Vous allez
Ils / Elles vont

This week on Friday, we will also have the verbes Finir & Faire:

Finir:
Je finis
Tu finis
Il / Elle / On finit
Nous finissons
Vous finissez
Ils / Elles finissent

Faire:
Je fais
Tu fais
Il / Elle / On fait
Nous faisons
Vous faites
Ils / Elles font

Ash Wednesday Liturgy:

As mentioned, we will be responsible for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy on March 6th at 1:30 PM and all the students have a reading part.  I have given them their sheets and have asked them to practice at home too.  It shouldn't be difficult, but in case we get stage fright, having practiced is what can save us :).  PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!
