Caring for others - Sept 28

Today was a day when we looked deeper at what it means to care for others than ourselves.  We had Mr. Harries come talk to us about the Terry Fox Run and what it means when families are affected by cancer or any other sickness.  Everyone showed how deeply caring they are and paid great attention to Mr. Harries.  Thank you Mr. Harries for visiting us today in class!

We also showed how we care for others by caring for our worms.  We took some time out of our crazy busy day and fed our little worms today.
If you have spare newspapers (shredded preferable), or composting materials (see picture of what our worms like), please don't hesitate to send them in.  Our worms will thank you 😋

Math:
Here is the great Fibonacci artwork.  :)

Today, we also continued talking about patterns and we started talking about extending these patterns.  We also received our cahiers de mathematiques and we will be using those to continue to practice our topics in mathematics.

Reminder: Math quiz on Thursday (Oct 4) - will be multiplication again!

French:
In French we talked about our nouns in class and created a massive list of masculin et feminin nouns.  We will be choosing from that list for the french dictee (October 12th).
Note: We will have our french dictee on Monday October 1 with the words from last week.  The next one after that will be on October 12 as we have a 4 day long weekend starting October 5th.

English:
We are working on nouns in English as well and we managed to get through almost all of the work.  We will wrap this up shortly so we can get to story writing and reading Wonder in the class.

Social Studies:
We talked a bit about Alberta and read an indigenous story.  We will continue to work on Alberta and we will now be starting a section on the Rocky Mountains.
We will be learning about fossils and other amazing things and we will be creating some artwork as well.  As such, if you have any extra cardboards at home that you don't want, please send them in as we could definitely make good use of them.  Thank you!

Homework:

- Complete all math review sheets - DUE: MONDAY OCT 1
Les mots de la semaine and Words of the week can be found at these links.

Raz-Kids Assignment:
As mentioned in the previous blog and my email, I have set up French reading assignments in Raz-kids.  For this week, I have assigned two(2) books.  The next few weeks this will increase so we can practice our reading skills.  Students can continue to read the English books too and earn stars that way (as many are already doing).  The students should now know which passwords to use.  Please try to record how they are reading through the raz-kids program.  Some of you did, thank you!

NEW!!! Challenge of the week:
A soccer ball flew right onto Mme. Kiss' back.  3 suspected culprits were called into the principal's office for investigation.
Shawn: "I did not do it!"
Andy: "Not me! But I saw Shawn kick that shot."
      James: "Andy lied."
One of them told the truth.  Who kicked the soccer ball?

Remember that you have to bring a written solution to the problem to get a sticker!!!!

Art, art, we love art :) - Sept 27

We really do love art and that's what we did much of today :).  Well, not entirely, but when Art and Math go so well together as in the Fibonacci sequence, then it's hard not to.

Math:
We finished all our Fibonacci art work.  The idea was a bit challenging at first, but when I post the pictures here, you will see how amazingly creative everyone in the class is.

We also did a quick practice quiz today in math.  The questions were simple multiplication questions.  The majority did really well.  These are not the easiest as the only way to practice is by simply practicing our multiplication, addition, subtraction and division facts, but I will send home some extra worksheets next week to help build everyone's confidence. 😊

French:
In French we worked on our nouns in the classroom (masculin & feminin).  We all finished, so tomorrow we will start creating our classroom list to help us become more comfortable with these.

Picture Day:
The day was a bit different today as we also had our pictures taken.  The kids looked absolutely amazing and their smiles on their pictures should show the same :).  The photographers were truly wonderful.

Homework:

- Complete math review sheets for Thursday. (Finish Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as well if not finished.)
Les mots de la semaine and Words of the week can be found at these links.

Please note that since we did not get a chance to write our spelling words in our Agendas at the beginning of the week, and some of the students were not really exposed to the list since Monday, we agreed that it would only be fair if we did the tests on Monday (October 1) instead.  This way, everyone has the chance to practice these words a bit more.  We have seen most of these words throughout the week in different contexts, but extra practice time never hurts :).
Raz-Kids Assignment:
As mentioned in the previous blog and my email, I have set up French reading assignments in Raz-kids.  After talking it over in the classroom, I have decided that for the first week, we will only have two(2) books.  The next few weeks this will increase so we can practice our reading skills.  Students can continue to read the English books too and earn stars that way (as many are already doing).  Again, the passwords were changed, so please check my email for more information on that.  The students should now know which passwords to use.  Please try to record how they are reading through the raz-kids program.

Another busy day... - Sept 26

Another busy day today....

Today we practiced our typing skills in the morning.  Many have now almost completed all the levels so I am setting up a new program that will have many more lessons and levels to work on.  By the end of this year, we will all be better typists.  :)

In math we talked about Fibonacci and Fibonacci's sequence.  We read the book Blockhead by Joseph D'Agnese.  We learned about who Fibonacci was and why he admired numbers so much.  We also discovered how so many of us have seen Roman Numerals before and how Fibonacci was at the forefront of the use of Arabic numerals worldwide.   Most importantly, we learned that by being great observers, we could see all the beautiful ways math and numbers are represented in nature and all around us.

We also learned about the problem that made Fibonacci famous. We thought we could share it with everyone to try :).

There was a man who put two baby rabbits in a field.  It takes rabbits one month to grow up and be ready to have babies.  And it takes them one more month to give birth to a pair of baby rabbits.  Every month a pair of grown-up rabbits give birth to a new pair of baby rabbits.  How many pairs of rabbits will the man have at the end of the year?

Today we also worked on our "masculin et féminin" nouns in French and we will continue to build on these through our dictées and in-class work.  We are also making use of our dictionaries and learning how to search for words in the most efficient ways.

Finally, at the end of the day, we set up and accessed our brand new Raz-Kids accounts.  I sent an email around to everyone regarding these.  Please note that the passwords have been changed and are now unique to each child.  I am also now adding French reading assignments into the program.  These are to be completed by the end of each week (Sunday.)  The assignments (5 books for this week) are in folders with dates on them (i.e. Week of Sept 24-28.)  Please record your child reading these books on your device and send the recordings to me for listening.  These will be my bedtime stories 😉, but will also be used to help assess where each student is at.

Singing day :) - Sept 25

Today we not only faced our challenges in Math and in French, we also did some cool history review of Canada and Alberta looking at the connection between the railroad and immigration.  You can also have a look at this here:

Chemins de fer et immigration (1867-1914)

It is really interesting to note how the country and Alberta have changed since 1867.

We also did something different today and we recorded the class singing two songs.

&

Lyrics to Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ!

We have such amazing singers in our class.  These are not professional recordings, but we most certainly could do them :)

Next week we will start working with the recorders so please send in a recorder sometime this week.

Et on continue! - Sept 24

Well, week 4 of school has now also begun.  I can't believe how fast this year is moving along.

In Math, we returned to learning about patterns and started working on some questions that we will complete in class.  These will prepare us for the introduction of the Fibonacci sequence and the art piece we will be working on. Review work was sent home today.  Monday should be completed for tomorrow.

In French we returned to "le genre des noms".  This topic seems to be a bit of a challenge for many, so we will have to practice this a little more.  :)

Today, we not only listened to our new song of the week (see below), but we also had Hymn sing in the morning.  We do absolutely love music.  😄
(We will have our own Terry Fox Run on Friday the 28th.)

Next week we will start working with the recorders and learning how to play some music ourselves.  Please send in a recorder sometime this week.

Observation of worms:  Today, we also got to see our little worms.  They were hiding really well, but we did get to see some.  We will now need to start feeding them and we'll also need lots of newspapers to keep them warm and sheltered.  We will also be learning about how they do the amazing work that they do :).

I have recently added some new resources on the Resources page, please make sure to check them out.

Finally, your students will have a piece of paper in their Agenda for an online reading program called Raz-Kids.  We will be discussing how to use this program on Wednesday morning.  With this program, students will be able to read French books on their computers, iPads or any other devices, record their voices while reading and the recordings will then be sent to me to listen to.  I look forward to listening to everyone as it is not always possible to get to hear everyone reading during the day.  (We did run out of time for the Agendas, so we will be updating these tomorrow.)

Amazing Field Trip - Sept 20, 21

It has come and gone. Our field trip with Beakerhead is over but the memories will stay with us for a long time.

We spent the day learning about electricity and Tesla coils (making music with them), plant growth and care, and most importantly how important teamwork is through a shelter-building task. We also made “seed bombs” and wind chimes.

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip and were very pleased that it did not rain though it was a tad chilly. Thank you to our two amazing volunteers who helped make this trip safe and fun.

Here are some photos :)

Chanson de las semaine:

Les mots de la semaine and Words of the week can be found at these links.

Extra challenge for next week:
Paul is taller than Joe.
William is shorter than Paul.
Eddie is taller than William but shorter than Joe.
Rank all the children from the tallest to the shortest.

Important Dates next week:
- Sept 27 - PICTURE DAY (Wear your best smile 😀)
- Sept 27 - Sammy's Pizza
- Sept 28 - Terry Fox Run
- Sept 28 - Sandwich Ministry

Looking ahead to October:
- French Language Arts - We will continue reviewing some basics and we will be also doing some "conjugaison des verbes".    We will start our reading incentive.  The program will be focused on French reading as that is a very important foundation we need for many of the other subjects we are working on.  More details will be coming home next week. We will continue to have weekly spelling tests.
- English Language Arts - We will be working our reading and writing skills as well as reviewing the basics at the same time.  We will also start working on our book that we will write about our trip to Beakerhead.  We will continue to have weekly spelling tests as well.
- Math - We will continue to work on Patterns and Relations.  We will be doing more review of our basic math skills and some of it will be going home as homework / extra practice.  Looking forward to doing an art piece around the Fibonacci sequence as well.  In addition, every Thursday we will have a math quiz on basic operations (multiplication, addition, subtraction - division as well, though that will be talked about a bit more later too).
- Social Studies - We will be exploring Alberta further next month and in particular learning about the Rocky Mountains and the history of Alberta.  We will also try to incorporate some art pieces as we go.
- Science - We will continue to work on Waste and our World.  We will start looking at composting, producers, consumers, etc.  Ultimately we will try to come up with individual action plans on how to be more supportive of our environment.  We are also very excited to be able to have a look at our classroom worms on Monday Sept 24 :).
- Art - We will continue exploring forms, shapes and designs (abstract and real) and connecting these to nature.
- Music - We will start learning the recorder next month.  Please send a recorder with your child next week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Rain, rain, go away!!! - Sept 19

While today was a beautiful day, the forecast tomorrow seems a little more rainy than we had hoped.  However, we are NOT scared of rain!!!  The field trip is still on and we will still have a ton of fun :)

For the Field Trip it is therefore IMPORTANT to:
- dress warm, as the predicted high for the day is 7C (not much)
- wear rain boots or snow boots - 90% chance of rain (not a small chance)
- bring an umbrella or better yet a poncho or rain coat (ponchos can be purchased at the dollar store and they will protect the backpacks as well.)
- pack snacks and an easy to eat lunch (not liquid or requiring forks/spoons preferably)
- pack a bottle of water (no juice please, as these can be very sticky if spilled)
- NO SLIME OR PUTTY PLEASE (This goes for school in general as well.  We seem to be having some issues with some students bringing slime and it is something that is very messy and distracting, so I ask that you remind your children that they can't have slime in school or it will become mine until the end of the year.  I'm sure they would prefer it didn't!)

A FEW REMINDERS:
Sept 20 - (tomorrow) - Field Trip
- Sept 20 - 21 - Parent teacher conferences - please sign up for a spot if you have not done so already.
Sept 21 - Volunteer orientation
Sept 21 - Scholastic orders due

TODAY - "Je suis Albertain / Albertaine"
Today, we talked about Alberta and what it means to be Albertan even though many of us are from someplace else or have descendents from someplace else.  Talk to your kids about their heritage and how they got to become Albertans.  They absolutely love to share and I love to hear.

OUR BLOG:
Some of you may have noticed that I made some changes to our blog.  I have added a Calendar of events, which hopefully makes it easier to track all the exciting things that are happening at the school.
I also added a list of the blogs in the bottom instead of having all of them on one page.  This way, the latest will always show but the rest can be found further down.
I have also created separate pages for the "Weekly Challenges", "Les mots de la semaine", "Words of the week" and for "Resources and Links".  One these pages you can find the latest information without having to search through the blogs.  I will continue to expand these pages as time allows :).

NOTE:
- This week's challenge will extend into next week as we will be on a field trip tomorrow and there is no school Friday.  Therefore, it can be solved by next Friday (Sept 28)
- Spelling tests will start again next week.  We will also have weekly math tests on either multiplication / addition / subtraction / division or the material we covered during the week.  These are really to assess our understanding and make changes as needed to ensure we all feel confident at the end of the year with everything we learned and did throughout the year.
- Last week's spelling tests will be returned tomorrow at the end of the day.  Some have done very well, others just need to practice a little more.  Reading every night helps with this too.

Have a fabulous evening!
😃

Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ! - Sept 18

We had our year opening mass today so we are ready to grow in Faith and grow in Christ.  We had a nice walk to Church and back and also received beautiful blessed rosaries.

Just a few important reminders again...

IMPORTANT DATES:
Sept 20 - (Thursday) - Field Trip
- Sept 20 - 21 - Parent teacher conferences - please sign up for a spot if you have not done so already.
Sept 21 - Volunteer orientation
Sept 21 - Scholastic orders due

FIELD TRIP:
We have all the field trip forms in now... THANK YOU :)

For Thursday, please make sure that your child has layers of clothes that they can put on if they need or take off if we are lucky and the weather is nice.  Also, please pack them snacks and a lunch that is easy (i.e. not messy) to eat on the go.  The students also reminded me that a water bottle should also be in their backpacks. They really help Mme when she forgets things.  :)

SCIENCE:
Today in preparation for the field trip (where students will be resolving problems by "visiting" a new planet) we did a short science experiment on how easy it is to launch a rocket into space from a planet that is also rotating.  As we will be talking about simple machines and building machines, the science behind this is something very relevant.  Each student got a small plastic ball, sat on my chair and attempted to launch the ball into a small red basket (planet :)) while I was rotating the chair.  Not an easy task, something not even I could do.  We did have one student, though, who succeeded and he certainly got big cheers from his peers: Stephen :).  Bravo Stephen!

I think we have some future rocket scientists in our class!!!

CLASSROOM JOBS:
We have succeeded at assigning classroom jobs today.  We have seven jobs and everyone was very eager to be part of the process.  We picked at random for the assignments but everyone could refuse two jobs before having to accept one if their names got drawn again.  We also picked backups for these jobs.  We will be rotating them every two weeks.  Although I planned on starting next week, many were eager to take on their roles already :)  I was very impressed.

A demain!

What a busy day... :) - Sept 17

Today the day went by so fast, it was incredible.  Everyone worked well today so I was very impressed.

IMPORTANT DATES:
- Sept 18 - (tomorrow) - Mass at 10:00 AM (dress a bit nicer :))
- Sept 20 - (Thursday) - Field Trip
- Sept 20 - 21 - Parent teacher conferences - please sign up for a spot if you have not done so already.
- Sept 21 - Volunteer orientation
- Sept 21 - Scholastic orders due

Please return field trip forms if you have not done so as we are now getting really close to our departure date and I really don't want anyone missing this amazing opportunity.

Please make sure that your child has layers of clothes that they can put on if they need or take off if we are lucky and the weather is nice.  Also, please pack them snacks and a lunch that is easy (i.e. not messy) to eat on the go.

Thank you to our volunteers.  I look forward to working with you.

OUR SONG OF THE WEEK:
We did not get a chance to listen to this song, but it's very related to the work we are doing on waste and our world.  Listen to it if you get a chance. :)

LIBRARY (LEARNING COMMONS):
We went to the Learning Commons today and got some books (1 French and 1 English.)  Please help your child read 20 minutes every night.  If they can do 20 minutes in French and 20 in English, that would be even better.  We have not started the incentive program yet, but we'll start soon.  Daily reading helps build vocabulary, comprehension, fluency in reading and writing and even helps with problem solving.

Special Thanks:
Thank you Xavier for showing us your fish.  It is a really interesting one :)

Bonne fin de semaine! - Sept 14

Well, another week has gone by.  A very busy week :)

Today the students did their spelling tests and we also had Green Calgary visit us.  The presentation was amazing and we learned a ton.  The students got to think like Engineers and had to design landfills that would be Eco friendly (not let leachate leak into the ground, not let animals eat the garbage, and even consider solutions to the leachate buildup and methane gas being produced by the garbage.)   This was fun, educational and the students worked incredibly well within their teams.

We even got 1/2 lb of worms in a blue bin.  They are now resting and getting used to their new home.  We will get a chance to look at them for the first time on Sept 24th.  We need to give them time to feel comfortable :).

We are all very eager to see them, but I am sure time will just fly by with everything we have planned for next week.

REMINDERS:
- Please fill out and return the field trip forms ASAP as our field trip will be taking place next Thursday (Sept 20th)
- Sept 17 - Healthy Hunger
- Sept 18 - School Opening Mass @ 10:00 AM
- Sept 20 - Field Trip - leaving at 10:30 AM - back at 2:30 PM * PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU CAN VOLUNTEER! (hajnal.kiss@cssd.ab.ca)

More news and busy days :) - Sept 13

Well, it's almost the weekend again, but before we get there, just a few reminders and some great news!

REMINDERS:
1) Spelling tests (both in French and English) tomorrow - please review the words.
2) Try the math challenge.  We will be talking about it.  (Sum of two numbers is 80, difference is 12, what are the two numbers?)
3) Green Calgary visiting us tomorrow at 10:50 AM (slightly earlier)

GREAT NEWS:
1) We will also have a worm bin coming tomorrow, from Green Calgary, that we will keep in our classroom for the rest of the year.  This is really exciting as we can care for the worms and learn about the wonderful things they do for our environment (vermicomposting).

2) FIELD TRIP - We will have a Field trip on Sept 20th to Fort Calgary to explore science topics that we will be covering this year with the help of Beakerhead (Engineered Spectacle Tour).  The students will get the opportunity to explore a variety of ways of learning about these topics (Waste and our world, simple machines and plant growth).  This experience is available only once a year, so we are really lucky to be able to take part in it.

PLEASE RETURN THE FIELD TRIP FORM ASAP!  Merci :)

More information about the Field Trip:
- It will be outdoors, so kids should dress accordingly for the weather (praying for no snow)
- Students should have in their backpacks: water bottle, snack, lunch, and medication if needed)
- The bus will leave the school at 10:30 AM and will return at 2:30 PM.
- Unfortunately, this trip falls on a Sammy's pizza day, so the kids who ordered pizza will get them at the end of the day.  If you could pack a lunch that the kids could eat easily for that day, it would be greatly appreciated.
- I will also need at least two wonderful parent volunteers for the day!  Parent volunteers should be at the school by 10:15 AM.  Thank you in advance
(Volunteer Orientation info:
https://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/stgerard/Parents/Volunteer/Pages/default.aspx  This must be completed if it has not been done so in the past.)

"To do or not to do?" that is the homework question :) - Sept 12

Homework:
Some of you may see your kids with duotangs (Math, English, French) with worksheets in them.  Today we organized some of the work we did already, and I gave the students the option of bringing home their duotangs to finish their worksheets.  Some of it we didn't even start in class, but again the students were given the option of doing the work at home if they wanted to as "Homework" (particularly the unfinished work).  We will be going through all the material together in class and making corrections where necessary.

Therefore, this work is NOT mandatory homework as we are still working on the worksheets and that is why not everyone will have brought it home.

FRIDAY:
1) We will have a quick spelling "test" of the words we covered this week.
2) We will have Calgary Green visit us and talk to us about Waste and our World.
3) We will go over the Défi Mathématique - so do give it a try at home with your child (see previous blog).

Have a lovely evening!

From all of us in la 4ème année :)
